L'enregistrement de l'album a également fait l'objet d'un documentaire visible à la télé en fin d'année.

Une décennie après ses débuts chez Blue Note Records, et suite aux deux volumes des albums Black Radio orientés R&B, Robert Glasper annonce ses retrouvailles avec son fameux trio jazz acoustique. Glasper, Archer (basse) et Reid (batterie) - le trio originel qui signe les deux premiers albums publiés chez Blue Note, "Canvas" (2005) et "In my element" (2007) - se sont retrouvés en décembre aux légendaires Studios Capitol à Hollywood, pour enregistrer "Covered" devant un public d'invités. Comme son titre "Covered" l'indique, l'album comporte en majorité des reprises de chansons parmi les préférées de Glasper signées Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, Jhené Aiko, John Legend ou Kendrick Lamar avec également quelques compositions personnelles du leader.
